Northwest Basketball - Season Details

Overview of the Basketball Season

         Programs for all age categories including: Mites 1 (U7), Mites 2 (U9), U11 Boys & Girls, U13 Boys & Girls, U15 Boys & Girls, U17 Boys & Girls

  • All Northwest Basketball teams (except Mites categories) play league games as part of the Edmonton Youth Basketball Association (EYBA) season which runs from October to March.

  • Teams play 1 game per week with league games for recreational teams (C Division and lower) being played on Saturdays. Occasionally, there will be times during the season when a team plays 2 games on a given Saturday.

  • Competitive teams (A & B Division) play 1 game per week (Tuesday or Wednesday nights) with the occasional week that sees teams play an additional game on the odd Thursday night

  • Practices for teams will be once per week on any given weeknight from Monday to Friday. Practices are a minimum of 1 hour with some teams having 1.5 hour practices. Specific nights and practice time are determined by coach availability as well as gym availability.

  • Practice locations also depend on gym availability and can be anywhere in the Northwest Zone. PLEASE NOTE: Because the Northwest Zone is geographically one of the largest (if not the largest) zones in Edmonton, players need to be prepared to practice anywhere in our zone.

Mites 1 and Mites 2 Categories

  • The Mites groups don't play official league games, they  have skills session every week (one, 1-hour session per week from October to March). Sessions include non-competitive inter-group mini games along with skills development.

  • Sessions are held at various gyms in the Northwest zone on weeknights and could fall on any night (Monday to Friday) depending on who the coach is and what gyms are available.

  • Each player receives a special training basketball and a reversible Northwest jersey that they get to keep. A year-end tournament is held in March where Mites groups get to play games against similar groups from other zones. There is no cost to players for this Tournament as Northwest pays the tournament fee.

  • Specific session days and timeslots for Mites are not known until coaches and gym bookings are confirmed in mid to late September.
