2024-25 SEASON INFORMATION

PLEASE READ AND BE AWARE OF THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION

REGARDING PRACTICE DAYS AND TIMES:

 

***Northwest Basketball cannot provide specific practice gym times, days and locations at the time of or before registrations.

 

7U-18U teams should be prepared to practice between 5:00 pm and 10:00 pm any day from Sunday to Friday.

We will do our best to accommodate all players, but our first commitment is to the coach's schedule.

Younger age groups (7U-11U) are typically scheduled for the earlier practice time slots (5:00-7:30pm) while the older players (13U-18U) are slotted in the later time slots (7:30-9:30pm).

REFUND POLICY- for Fall/Winter EYBA Season: 

Please read and be aware of our Refund Policy before proceeding with your registration. 

ALL Refunds requested, regardless of reasons for cancellation, will be subject to an automatic $100 cancellation fee. 

Refunds requested before teams are formed (before Sept 8) will be subject to this automatic $100 cancellation fee.

Refunds requested after teams are formed (after Sept 8) are subject to a $150 cancellation fee.

This refund may also be pro-rated based on the number of games/ training sessions that have occurred to the date the refund was requested. Fees will NOT BE REFUNDED due to players not being able to attend games or practice/training sessions.

PLEASE NOTE: ALL registration fees are NON-REFUNDABLE after the first game of the 2024-25 Fall EYBA Season and first game of the 2025 Winter EYBA Season for 18U category.This means NO REFUNDS will be issued after the first game of the Fall/Winter Season) and and first game of the Winter 18U Season have been played. 

PLAYER/TEAM ASSIGNMENT: Once players have been assigned to their specific teams, there will be NO MOVEMENT of players from one team to another. 

 

 

2024-25 Season Information

The season begins late August with evaluation sessions at 13U and 15U levels (See Tier 1/2 Program details below). These sessions will group players of like ability onto teams to compete against similar strength teams from other communities in the City.

11U through to 18U teams will compete in a developmental/recreational City League from October through February. In March, City playoffs are held where the top tier teams from Tier 1,2 and Tier 3 Divisions will be eligible to participate in the Provincial championships later in March.

Equipment - All players require clean, indoor athletic shoes and a properly sized basketball. Jerseys will be supplied to teams in 11U, 13U, 15U and 18U categories.

Ball Size:

Size 5: (27 1/2") - 7U/9U Mites and 11U Boys/11U Girls

Size 6 (28 1/2") - 13U Boys/13U Girls, 15U Girls and 18U Girls

Size 7 (29 1/2") - 15U Boys and 18U Boys

 

Competitive Tier 1/2 Program (13U Boys and Girls/15U Boys and Girls)

If a Tier 1/2 team is entered in EYBA, top players will be selected from the Fall Tier 1/2 tryouts in late August.

Exact dates, times & locations for tryouts will be posted on the Northwest website in early August 2024.

Tier 1/2 team players will play in the EYBA's 13U and 15U "Tier 1" or "Tier 2" divisions.

Typically, Boys "Tier 1 & 2" division games are scheduled for Tuesday evenings and Girls "Tier 1 & 2" divisions on Wednesday evenings.

 

2024-25 Season Age Categories & Registration Fees**

 

(7U Boys, 7U Girls/Coed)- Players born in 2018 & 2019

(9U Mites)- Players born in 2016 & 2017

Registration Fee: $300.00

The NW 7U/9U Program is designed with an emphasis on developing basic skills in a non-competitive environment. A smaller, lighter ball is used at this level so players can develop confidence in their passing and catching skills and shooting the ball to the height of the basket.

The program is specifically designed for players trying basketball for the first time. Sessions are traditionally mixed (boys and girls together) and players will participate in practice sessions once per week. No official league games are played however, small inter-group games are a part of each practice session. These inter-group games focus on skill development while keeping it fun for the kids. The kids receive a jersey and ball at the start of the season, which they get to keep. All NW Mites teams players will also have the opportunity to participate in the EYBA "Mites" Tournament at the end of the season (March 2025).

Practices: once per week (Sunday to Friday) for 1hr or 1.25 hrs. Same day and time and location every week.

 

11U GIRLS AND 11U BOYS - Players born in 2014 & 2015

Registration Fee: $395.00

The 11U category plays once a week (Saturday and/or some Sundays) in the Edmonton Youth Basketball Association (EYBA). Teams practice once per week in a gym in the Northwest Zone.

Practice gym locations, practice days and times are TBD and subject to gym and coach availability. 11U games are played four on four, on 8.5-foot-high baskets.

Practice Commitment:

once per week (Monday to Friday) for 1hr - 1.5 hrs. Same day and time and location every week. 

 

13U GIRLS AND 13U BOYS- Players born in 2012 & 2013

Registration Fee: $405.00

There are two streams for 13U age players:

1.) Competitive Tier 1/2 Program

2.) Community Program

13U players in the Competitive Tier 1/2 Program play once a week in the EYBA (Tuesday nights for 13U Boys and Wednesday nights for 13U Girls).

13U players in the Community Program play once a week in the EYBA (Saturday and/or some Sundays).

Tryouts for the 13U Tier 1/2 Program teams occur in late August/early September and there are no tryouts for Community Program teams. Teams practice once per week in a gym in the Northwest Zone.

Practice gym locations, practice days and times are TBD and subject to gym and coach availability. 13U games are played five on five (on 10-foot-high baskets) and they play four eight-minute quarters.

Practice Commitment:

once per week (Monday to Friday) for 1hr - 1.5 hrs. Same day and time and location every week. 

 

15U GIRLS AND 15U BOYS - Players born in 2010 & 2011

Registration Fee: $405.00

There are two streams for U15 age players:

1.) Competitive Tier 1/2 Program

2.) Community Program

15U players in the Competitive Tier 1/2 Program play once a week in the EYBA (Tuesday nights for 15U Boys and Wednesday nights for 15U Girls).

15U players in the Community Program play once a week in the EYBA (Saturday and/or some Sundays). Teams practice once per week in a gym in the Northwest Zone.

Practice gym locations, practice days and times are TBD and subject to gym and coach availability. Tryouts for the 15U Tier 1/2 Program teams occur in late August/early September and there are no tryouts for Community Program teams. The 15U games are played five on five (on 10-foot-high baskets) and they play four nine-minute quarters.

18U GIRLS AND 18U BOYS - Players born in 2007, 2008 & 2009

Registration Fees:

$300.00 for Fall Season (Oct-Dec)

$300.00 for Winter Season(Jan-Mar)

18U Boys and Girls play once (sometimes twice) a week (Friday, Saturday and/or some Sundays) in the EYBA.

*There are two separate seasons for the 18U age category. The first season is the Fall League, which runs from September to November. The second season is the Winter League, which runs from January to March.

Practice Commitment:

once per week (Monday to Friday) for 1hr - 1.5 hrs. Same day and time and location every week. 

18U players & parents PLEASE NOTE:

Players participating on their Sr Varsity high school basketball team are not eligible to play in the Winter League as per Alberta Schools Athletic Association rules that state: “To be eligible for high school provincial competition in the ASAA sports of basketball, volleyball, football, cheerleading, team handball and rugby, a high school student is not permitted to play on a non-school team in the same sport during the same season.”
